Former apprentice who landed dream Twigworth job excited for show home launch

While he was busy wiring homes, a former apprentice dreamt of one day building them – that wish came true for the project manager at a Twigworth housebuilder, which is launching show homes this weekend.

Ex-apprentice electrician Dave White, of Vistry Group – which includes Linden and Bovis Homes – is calling on other young people to take the apprenticeship route, as the housebuilder’s Twigworth Green location unveils four show homes, available to view on an appointment-only basis.

Linden Homes is launching a three-bedroom Elmslie and four-bedroom Mylne show home, while Bovis Homes is unveiling Aspen and Maple show homes, which both have four bedrooms, this Saturday. Linden Homes is also releasing its first properties at the location, off Tewkesbury Road.

Dave, from Longlevens, loves telling his family about progress at Twigworth Green, including wife Marie, who is his childhood sweetheart, and Ava, 9, Thea, 7 and Livie, 3. As project manager he oversees all the work at the development, as well as housebuilding. This includes infrastructure, services and land obligations.

Dave, who went to Chosen Hill School before undertaking a three-year apprenticeship, said: “We have some terrific homes launching at Twigworth Green this weekend, including a selection of show homes that we’re really proud of, and home hunters can come and see them if they make an appointment with our sales team. Our build team has put a huge effort into these three and four-bedroom homes, which are perfect for couples and families and we can’t wait to see people moving into their dream homes.

“I always dreamt of becoming a housebuilder and the apprenticeship route was just right for me. I wanted to get out there and start earning from school and I learnt a great deal during my three-year apprenticeship. Anyone – young or old – who values learning on the job and wants a skill should consider this path.

“After I completed my apprenticeship, I climbed to team leader and then area manager at the electrical company, before joining Bovis Homes as a trainee assistant site manager. I had a great mentor at the housebuilder and could use all the knowledge I gained working on Bovis Homes and Linden Homes as an electrician and put that into site management. I got my industry qualifications – including first aid and site courses – and became a site manager then progressed to project manager nearly 18 months ago, which I love.

“The biggest eye opener for me, moving from the electrical company to Vistry, was how much of a team effort housebuilding is, and how much we work with our office-based colleagues. Also, how many people are involved in the whole process, from planning to build.

“Ava and Thea have come into the office a couple of times and they’re really interested in the drawings and programmes, and they ask a lot of lovely questions. They do show interest in the design and engineering side, so who knows if they’ll pick it up in the future!”

This first phase of 79 homes at Twigworth Green will feature designs from Bovis Homes’ latest collection and include three and four-bedroom homes, with a second Linden Homes phase now starting to be released.

Vistry has secured reserved matters planning consent for a second phase of 159 Bovis and Linden Homes in Twigworth, where a total of 725 properties are to be built, and the housebuilder will be investing £6.9million in the community. A state-of-the-art sales centre was launched at Twigworth Green earlier this year.

Nicola Goldsmith, sales and marketing director for Vistry’s Cotswolds region, said: “We are thrilled to be able to launch these four impressive show homes. Homebuyers will be able to choose from a range of contemporary homes that are designed for modern living, with space to work from home, a master bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, open-plan kitchen and living areas, plus stunning higher ceilings that really create a sense of space and light.”
